What should the next County budget buy?

The County budget presentation is scheduled for November 25. Which services should get more money—and what would pay for them?

A County decision affecting Zorra. County-wide record
About this decision

The next County Council inherits a substantial spending programme and an early test of its priorities. The detailed approved January 14 budget records $406,890,915 in expenses: $279,035,275 operating and $127,855,640 financed capital. The budget webpage retains an earlier $406.1 million headline. These are approved budget amounts, not a measure of money already spent or the County tax levy alone. A September agenda preview schedules the 2027 budget presentation for November 25, two December deliberations and final tabling in January. Residents need comparable explanations of service changes, costs, funding and the consequences of delaying investment. The next useful comparison is each prospective County representative’s proposed trade-off, followed by the adopted budget and actual results.

Ask the people in chargeWhich service or outcome should residents see improve for this spending?

How to read the figures

Budgeted expenses, property-tax requirements and recorded spending are different measures. The evidence below keeps them separate.

02

Who makes the next choice

County Council adopts the County budget. Local councils adopt separate municipal budgets; the County cannot simply redirect municipal, school-board or provincially restricted money.

The choices on the table

These are editorial alternatives to test, not attributed candidate promises.

Publish service-level trade-offs before voting

Editorial proposal: compare a maintained-service budget with clearly costed increases or reductions, including user fees and lifecycle costs.

Prioritize renewal before discretionary expansion

Editorial proposal: protects existing assets but can delay new services; evaluate asset risk and project-specific grants before adopting.

How we got here

  1. Approval

    2026 County budget approved

Approval establishes planned spending; subsequent expenditure and outcomes require financial reporting.

  2. Pending

Questions that still deserve an explanation

  • Which County service would you expand first, by how much, and how would you pay?
  • Which proposed capital project should be delayed if costs rise, and what is the consequence?
  • What measure will residents use after one year to judge whether additional spending worked?
